What to Expect From Your First Yoga or Pilates Class
If you’ve never been to a yoga or Pilates class before, it’s completely normal to feel a little unsure. Will I be the least flexible person in the room? Do I need to buy special equipment first? What if I don’t know what I’m doing?
Here’s the honest answer: nobody expects you to know what you’re doing. That’s the whole point of a first class. Below is exactly what your first visit to the studio in Ferreira do Zêzere looks like, step by step, so there are no surprises.
What to expect in this blog
Before you come
You don’t need to prepare much. A few simple things:
- Wear something comfortable you can move freely in — leggings, loose trousers, a soft t-shirt. Nothing you’d wear to the office.
- Bring a bottle of water. There’s always tea afterwards, but it’s good to have water during class.
- Bring a towel — I have all equipment, you just need something to put on the mat
- Arrive a few minutes early. Just so you have a moment to settle in instead of rushing straight from the car into the room.
You do not need any experience, any particular fitness level, or any prior flexibility. That last one surprises people the most: yoga and Pilates are how you build flexibility and strength — not something you need to already have.
What actually happens during the class
A Hatha Yoga class lasts 60 minutes. We move slowly through postures that work on strength and flexibility, spend time on breathing techniques, and always close with a few minutes of quiet relaxation (savasana). Nobody is pushed further than feels right — you’re guided step by step, and I always offer modifications.
A Pilates class starts with a gentle warm-up, moves into controlled, mat-based exercises focused on your core, posture and breathing, and ends with stretching. Every exercise has an easier and a harder version, so whether it’s your first class ever or your fiftieth, you’ll find your level.
Either way, the room is small. This isn’t a big anonymous studio where you disappear into the back row — you’ll be seen, and if something doesn’t feel right in your body, you’ll be corrected gently, not ignored.
"But what if I can't keep up?"
This is the question almost every beginner has, even if they don’t say it out loud. Here’s the truth: there is no “keeping up.” Nobody is racing anyone. If a stretch is too deep, you go less deep. If a movement is uncomfortable for your knees or your back, there’s almost always another way to do it. The goal of the first class isn’t to perform well — it’s just to try it and see how your body feels.
What people usually feel afterwards
Most first-timers say two things: their body feels looser than they expected, and they’re surprised by how calm their head feels for the rest of the day. Some soreness the next day is completely normal, especially after Pilates — that’s just muscles doing something new, not a sign anything went wrong.
Is it for me?
Short answer: almost certainly yes.
- New to exercise, or coming back after a long break? Both classes are built to meet you where you are.
- 50 or older, or dealing with a stiff back or joints? These are gentle, low-impact practices — many of our students are here precisely because they want something kind to their body, not punishing.
- Sitting at a desk all day? Pilates in particular is excellent for the tight hips and lower back that come with a lot of sitting.
- Just moved to the area and looking to meet people? Small classes are a nice, low-pressure way to get to know the local community.
