My journey with Essential Steps to Set Up the Perfect Yoga Space for Your Studio

In my previous blog, I shared the story of how yoga came into my life and why I ultimately chose to open my own yoga studio. Today, I want to take you a little further into that story – to the very beginning of my yoga studio.

When we settled into our quinta in Portugal, I knew I wanted to create a space where others could experience the same sense of peace and connection that yoga had brought me. But I didn’t even know how much space do I need for a yoga studio?

My very first classes

Did I mention that we bought a house with a campsite and rental apartments? That’s where I found my very first yoga students. In the beginning, I started small, teaching yoga classes outdoors. I had purchased a few mats from Decathlon and offered one class a week. It was a simple setup, but it was a beautiful way to start – surrounded by nature, breathing in the fresh air, and sharing yoga with guests staying at our property. However, it didn’t take long for me to realize that the Portuguese sun could be a little too warm for outdoor classes, especially as summer temperatures climbed. Luckily, we had an unused space on the property that, although it needed some love and attention, had the potential to be transformed into a cozy yoga studio. With some effort, I cleaned and set up the space, and soon it became the new home for my classes. It was much cooler indoors, offering a welcome relief from the heat while still preserving the sense of calm and connection that yoga brings. This small step marked the true beginning of my yoga studio. It wasn’t fancy, but it was perfect for what I needed at that time – a quiet and welcoming space to teach and grow. And from that simple, humble start, something much bigger began to take shape.

Creating the Perfect Space for My Yoga Studio

While the initial space was perfect to get started, I soon realized that I wanted to take things to the next level. The room, though cozy and functional, had its limitations. The number of participants it could accommodate was small, and its basic setup didn’t quite reflect the atmosphere I envisioned for my yoga studio.

Luckily, we had another option: an unused attic above our rental apartments. The space was completely empty and raw – a blank canvas full of potential. I could already imagine it: high ceilings, natural light, and a serene environment where students could fully immerse themselves in their practice.

Creating the Perfect Space for My Yoga Studio

The day the studio was finally ready was one of the proudest moments of my life. Seeing it all come together – from the sunlight streaming through the windows to the neatly arranged mats and props – was a dream come true. It was more than just a physical space; it was the culmination of hard work, passion, and a vision that had been growing in my heart since the first time I stepped onto a yoga mat.

This new studio not only allowed me to welcome more students but also gave me the opportunity to expand the types of classes and workshops I could offer. It became a space where both locals and guests from our campsite and apartments could come together to share in the practice of yoga, creating a wonderful sense of community.

In my next blog, I’ll share more about this.
